
What Causes Edema, Sleepiness And Lethargy Despite Taking Lasix?

Question: Mom is 92. One kidney. Has been sleepy and lethargic recently. Has confirmed CHF. Usually controlled by diet very well. Watchibg salt... had salt filled soup recentlfy..For the last 4 days, left and right ankle and foot ( left much greater than right) have been swollen with fluid. Tried stopping salt .... but no relief yet by diet. Left foot stayed swollen with fluid over night. Right one went down a little. Wheezing a little when she got up from sleep. Today took 20mg of lasix at 8 am. Dr said take another lasix tomorrow morning. Recently... in a blood test potassium was 5.4 and creatinine was 1.8--- both of which run about that high. BUN was 62.... thats high. What would you watch for and be concened about? Am i doing the right thing?

You do the right thing. Continue Lazix. The only advice that I can give you, you can add give her another 20mg Lazix, especially if she is out of breath when she wakes up and moves. Monitor her blood pressure and heart rate.
