Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014
Question: i had elevated alt and ast (64 and 41 respectively) a few weeks ago. at that time, i had been taking several motrin a day (3 x 200 mg 2-3 times a day) for about 3 days for joint pain. my dr wanted to repeat the test 2 weeks later which i did and the results were still hight (48 and 47). would 2 weeks be enough time in between tests to make a difference in the results?? thank you!!

Hi and welcome to HCM

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
This is not enough time to make difference. Hepatocytes regenerate much slower and reliable results can be seen after at least 4 weeks. Also, your liver enzymes are just slightly elevated, especially AST and it could definitely be caused by motrin or similar anlagetics, but such minor elevation can be seen in healthy people as well. Other most common causes are mild fatty liver alcohol intake. I dont think that further management is necessary at this point esepcially since your other findings are fine. you need to repeat LFT in 3-4 weeks and if there is persistent elev ation, then you need to do liver ultarsound and viral markers. Till that, avoid alcohol, heaptotoxic drugs and have healthy diet.
WIsh you good health. Regards
