What Causes Elevated TSH Levels In Blood?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Nov 2015
Question: Yes, thank you. At a recent routine health check up it was found, that my THS is a bit too high. My doctor wants me t take some medication to help out with my 'underperforming thyroid gland'. Is this really necessary? I'm a otherwise very healthy, slim, active 74 year old woman. thank you XXXX

Brief Answer:
may be best to consider replacement

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The thyroid hormone plays a role in metabolism of the tissues in different parts of the body and in development.
Very low levels can result in the build up of certain chemicals (glucosaminoglycans) within the tissues.

High TSH is associated with low levels of thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) as you mentioned.

It is true that this condition can sometimes have no symptoms (as in your case) or have only mild non specific symptoms.

Low hormone levels can potentially affect the heart causing a decrease in contraction of the heart, decreased pulse and decreased output of blood with each beat.

It can slow down the passage of food in the gut and may also be associated with increased levels of cholesterol.

Though you feel ok, it may be best to consider your doctor's suggestion to use the hormone replacement to prevent any underlying changes.

In the end it is your decisions but you should consider the pros and cons

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
