What Causes Elevated Liver Enzymes?
Question: Hello, I recently received blood work indicating that my liver enzymes were high, AST of 63 and Alt of 117. I do not drink and do not have Hepatitis. I'm 26, 5 foot 8 inches and weigh 180. My diet have not been the best the last year, but I am fixing that now. Could I get some guidance on what I should be focused / worried about?
Thanks
Thanks
Brief Answer:
Need further investigations
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your description and seen the reports. I hope that both hepatitis B and hepatitis C are negative.
I would suggest a few investigations.
Serum ceruloplasmin, ANA and an abdominal ultrasound.these tests will help detect common diseases which can cause high liver enzymes. These tests will help to diagnose Wilson's disease, autoimmune hepatitis and fatty liver.
Please consult a gastroenterologist regarding getting these tests.
Further line of management can be decided after getting these tests.
Hope this helps

Are these numbers that I should be extremely worried about? Or just keep an eye on my enzymes within the next year to see if they go down? I will try to do as you say.
Brief Answer:
not a cause for worry
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I would suggest to get the tests I have recommended. In case they are positive we can start the appropriate treatment.
Your Liver enzyme levels are not alarmingly high. In case the above tests.are normal then I would suggest to repeat them after 3 months.
Avoid fatty foods and deep fried foods and get regular exercise. ( minimum 30 min of brisk walk 4 - 5 times a week
Hope this helps
