What Causes Excessive Belching And Passing Of Gas With Pressure In Chest?
Question: Hello,
A bit over a month ago, I woke up with pressure on the chest and repetitive belching, thinking I was having a heart attack. I visited the doctor, had an ECG and blood test done. All was fine according to them and it wasn't my heart. I have had subsequent ECGs and blood tests to rule out heart issues. I have also had full blood work that came back all fine (liver, pancreas, blood country, etc)
They suggested GERD/GORD and prescribed Nexium 40mg + Zantac 150mg.
The problem is, these medications haven't made a difference to my symptoms. It's now been 1 month and a half, and I still have chronic belching. The problem is that the gas builds up in my esophagus and I start to get a choking sensation until I somehow release it. The gas is constant and I have been bloated the entire time (1 month and 1/2). The gas can be heard rumbling inside my body. It never switches off.
The doctors have no idea what it is and I'm waiting for an endoscopy. I have had an ultrasound of my gallbladder and there were no gallstones.
During this period, I have adopted a low fat diet of bland foods. It hasn't helped at all.
Please let me if you think you have an answer to my mystery, or something I could try to relieve the gas (simethicone doesn't work). Surely something has to be causing constant gas.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Dyspepsia /bowel candidosis to confirm diagnosis.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.
Belching and gas might be symptoms of :
- dyspepsia : that will be confirmed by upper endoscopy
- bowel infection : culture of feces will rule it out.
For the moment, I advise to :
- continue following the diet as you are taking now
- take probiotics to normalize intestinal flora
- take simethicone to reduce bloating
This measures until you get the above mentioned tests results.
All the best!

Hello Klerida,
Thanks for your response. Do you know anything else that will help relieve belching other than simethicone (it doesn't work for me)?
Also, am I right in thinking that belching is caused from gas in the stomach? As gas in intestines usually go down rather than up or can gas in intestines go up?
Thanks again

Brief Answer:
Domperidone/eucarbon to consider.....
Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
Another medications advised if simethicone does not work for you, include:
- domeperidone together with PPIs (at the same time)
- Eucarbon (which is a mixture of herbal extracts that will alleviate your symptoms:Vegetable charcoal (Carbo Ligni), senna leaves, Rhurab root (Extractum Rhei), essential milk oil, etc.
It is highly recommended to make healthy changes in your diet regimen as foods/drinks you use everyday will affect your bowel function.
