What Causes Excessive Mucus Formation?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Mar 2016
Question: My husband starting experiencing excess mucous just before Christmas....runny nose and spitting up the excess. We did go to see a doctor about 2 weeks ago and were told his lungs were clear and there were no outward signs of what might be causing his problem. He has never felt bad, had a fever, aches or anything like that. His biggest problem is that sometimes when he tries to eat, he feels like the food stops midway with some pressure and then he spits up the mucous off and on for several hours. He has taken Zyrteck and Mucinex but we are not sure this helps. He goes 2 or more days with no problems, then the situation comes back. He is 74

Brief Answer:
two problems

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
It sounds like he is having both allergies and some problem with his esophagus. The zyrtec may be helpful but the mucinex will not likely be much help. He needs to see an allergy specialist to find out what is going on. It is great that his lungs are clear but environmental allergies can cause a lot of mucus production and nose running.
The problem that he has when he tries to eat needs to be addressed by a gastroenterologist. They may want to do some sort of study to make sure there are no blockages in his esophagus.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
