What Causes Excessive Vomiting And Crying In An Infant?

default
Posted on Thu, 26 Mar 2015
Question: Hello, we have twins and they are just over 20 days old, both of them are girls, one of them has been puking, she puked her entire feed this evening (like almost all of what she drank whole day) and she has been crying a lot, we gave her some colic drops but that does not seemed to have helped.
She puked similarly yesterday as well, we are making sure we burp her after every feed. She made a very loud noise when she puked today which worried us.
Her temperature seems to be normal and she also seems to be wanting for more milk and ends up drinking all of it. Can you please recommend what could be wrong? should we take her to the doctor?
She weighs about 2.4kgs.

Brief Answer:
GERD

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.

It looks like the case of gastroesophageal reflux disease. If there is adequate weight gain and baby is passing stool normally nothing to worry. You can hold the baby upright for 20 to 30 mins after every feed. Head should be elevated by keeping the rolled towel or some cloth below shoulder of the baby(airway should be looked for). It will resolve on its own.

Also you can try domperidone drops after consulting a doctor if above remedies does not work.

Due to vomiting baby gets hungry often and she cries a lot.

If there poor weight gain, excessive irritability, dehydration then see a doctor.

If vomiting is projectile, stool is in smaller quantities and frequently mixed with mucus, no adequate weight gain then you should rule out pyloric stenosis.

Hope i helped you.
