What Causes Extreme Nausea And Dark Urine When Diagnosed With Gastroparesis?

default
Posted on Thu, 6 Oct 2016
Question: For two weeks now I've had trouble staying awake, extreme nausea, sometimes very dark urine sometimes not. I've only had 3 fevers in my lifetime and I'm 46, so that cannot be used as a factor. Usually I run negative fevers, which I have been running around 95-96. Sometimes white-ish stools although not very many bowel movements bcz I'm not holding down food well. Phenargen suppositories, which I've taken for migraines since I was 12, help a little (but have never caused light stools). I have been diagnosed with gastroparesis, but this isn't a stomach episode because I am staying fairly hydrated with water and a bit of ginger ale.

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone very carefully through your query. Gastroparesis is a condition characterized by slowing of the gastrointestinal movement. Our gastrointestinal tract has a forward propulsive movement (peristalsis) that moves the food material forward as it is digested, absorbed and finally expelled as feces. If somehow this movement gets hampered, food along with the digestive juices would stagnate, stomach acid will reflux into the food pipe and on the other hand the bowel habits would not be proper. Degradation of undigested food in the intestines by the intestinal bacteria may also lead to the excess gas formation.

In order to relieve yourself, you need to do the following:
* Avoid spicy food. Take small but frequent meals. Avoid long gaps between meals.
* Avoid alcohol intake (if it a part of your habit).
* Drink plenty of water and fluids.
* Take Prilosec (omeprazole) once daily before breakfast.
* Take plenty of green leafy vegetables as well as other sources of dietary fibers. Take fiber supplements like isabgol/psyllium husk or senna. I would insist you to increase your dietary fibre intake.
* Regular morning walk and exercise to keep the bowel movements proper.
* Prokinetics like itopride (prescription medicine) may be tried.
* Take curd or yogurt on daily basis. It contains beneficial bacteria and should help.

Hope that helps.

Let me know if I could help further.

I apparently wasn't very clear. This is NOT a gastroparesis episode. If you don't know what else it could be then I'm okay with you saying so since you aren't physically able to see me. My question was, what else could cause this need to sleep for days on end, only waking to sip fluids and causing intense nausea? If it were gastro, I would be throwing up foods from two days ago since I have a digestion time of 20-22 hours. I do not ever drink alcohol and while I agree that eating fibrous foods is healthy, I'm barely keeping down crackers. So currently, vegetables and long walks aren't options.

Brief Answer:
A couple of blood tests need to be done.

Detailed Answer:
Sorry for not being able to address your issue properly. Thanks for clarifying the issues. Gastroparesis is the likely cause of your nausea even though it is not associated with vomiting. About it inability to stay awake, there are a couple of issues to consider. Firstly you should get your TSH level checked since low TSH levels could give you such symptoms. The other possibility to configure is electrolyte imbalance. You should get your electrolyte level checked. Please upload the reports after you get them and I will guide you accordingly.
