Brief Answer:
Tachycardia from smoking

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns.

You have noticed an elevated heart rate prior to going to sleep at night. This elevated heart rate is usual with people who smoke. Cigarettes have numerous compounds including carbon monoxide. These compounds can cause elevated heart rates. Smoking also causes damage to the blood vessels around the heart and can cause early heart disease. I recommend that you consider stop smoking.

There are numerous medications now to help stop smoking including Chantix, Wellbutrin and nicotine replacements. Consider the elevated heart as the beginning sign of troubles to come.

Your elevate heart rate will not cause you to die suddenly at night. It will be the long term use of cigarettes that will eventually effect your heart and lungs.

I know this sounds like preaching but if you are truly concerned about your health you should seriously consider stop smoking.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact HCM again with your health care concerns or questions.
