Please call doctor on call and go to a 24 hour pharmacy.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I would not recommend replacing the metoprolol with valerian root.
My main concern is that metoprolol is in the family of medications called beta blockers and it is a medication that you have to taper off of, not stop abruptly.
I would recommend you do one of the following two things:
1. If you have run out of your prescription, call your doctor now. Most likely you will get an answering service that will send your call to a doctor who is on-call for your own dr. Tell him/her the situation and ask them to phone in a prescription of metoprolol to an all night pharmacy if there is one near you. Some Walgreens have 24 hour pharmacies. Get the medication filled and take it immediately.
Do not wait 3 days for your appointment to have this addressed. That is too long to be without your medicine.
2. If you can't get any metoprolol tonight (no all night pharmacies, etc) OR if you are experiencing any symptoms from the fast heart rate such as light headedness or chest pain, go to an ER.
Please, this needs to be addressed quickly.
About the Valerian: With most herbs we don't know if they are ok in pregnancy or not and they may be safe but there haven't been adequate studies on them. However, valerian is NOT one of those possibly safe botanicals. It is on the list of unsafe. So please don't use it while pregnant.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can clarify or provide further information.
