What Causes Fatigue, Bone Ache And Fever Post Unprotected Sexual Intercourse?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 Oct 2015
Question: I had unprotected sexual intercourse 7 days ago. I have a low grade fever 99.5 and no other symptoms it started 5 days after the possible exposure. The other person said they had a hiv test that came back negative 2 months ago and has had no other symptoms since then that would be defined as Accute HIV. It was a one time encounter. I also am feeling fatigued. Can symptoms present this early?

Brief Answer:
not likely to be related to intercourse

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
Some STDs may prsent with such early fever but it would be associated with other symptoms such as penis discharge, lymphadenopathy, rash or genital skin changes and fever would occur after these symptoms. So I dont think this is related to intercourse, but of course it cant be ruled out for 100%. Acute retroviral syndrome may hapen after 2 weeks and include nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, bone ache, fever ,throat pain etc. I would wait for few more days, see if some new symptoms of flu for example will occur. If there is worsening or any suspect of partners hiv positivity, then you should do tests. Wish you good health. Regards

In specific response to HIV can it present that soon after infection? Or does it take longer?

Brief Answer:
usually after 3 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Response to HIV, so called ARS, can occur even in first week after infection, but usually it happens 3-4 weeks after exposure. So it can be ruled out for sure, but this is still not something worrying.
