What Causes Feeling Of Being Conscious But Inability To Move Or Speak?
Question: My son has a problem he calls sleep paralysis. He ordered food last night at a Publix and went out-side to wait for his order. He sat on a bench by the door and passed out! Was out for over 4 hours and no one
helped him. He was aware that people were walking by but they were saying he was drunk and to leave him alone. This has happened in the past a couple of times but he was in bed and it only lasted a few minutes each time. He can only grunt a little when this happens but not enough to get help!. He is service connected; four years, Army with honorable discharge. Lives in XXXXXXX and works daily. Travels
2-1/2 hours each way each day to work. Very intelligent but is in mid forties now and not holding out as well. He is well liked by his clients, manual labor worker but can honestly do almost anything literally.
He is an industrial electrician by trade. VA has not done much to help. Lives in XXXXXXX Fl. We need direction on the kind of help we need. I'm not sure if it's neurological and/or cardiology or something else. I appreciate any direction you can give us. Thank you

From history there are some possible differential diagnoses in likely possible order.
1. Some kind of seizure disorder
2. Narcolepsy with cataplexy
3. Sleep movement disorder
4. Some neurological problem with brain pathology
5. Some kind of psychiatric problem
Proper neurological examination, routine blood investigations, EEG (electroencephalogram) and MRI Brain with epilepsy protocol should be done to reach exact diagnosis.
If neurologist has not been consulted yet please do the same. If you have any reports please upload the same.
