This pain is suggestive of a problem with the joints of the neck. At times, some movements would most likely provoke a pain and more so when movement is in a wrong direction.
For now, I will suggest that get an X-ray of the neck to get these structures evaluated. While pending this, A combination of Tylenol and Ibuprofen would provide rapid relief when this pain comes on.
