What Causes Feeling Of Lump In The Throat While Having Bipolar Disorder?

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Feb 2017
Question: I believe one of my bi-polar medications is not working. I'm having physical symptoms of like a lump feeling in my throat, my chest feels sore, my neck is stiff, and my shoulders are tense. I saw my md because I can't see my psychiatrist until February 7th. He told me to take an extra .05 klonopin- already take two. I'm on Geodon 80mg, Wellbutrin 300 mg, and Lamictal 300 mg. I really believe my Geodon isn't working because we have had anxiety troubles and had to change when I take it to earlier in the day. If my Geodon wasn't working well or not at all would I have these symptoms? All the extra klonopin did was make kinda of sleepy but I still have the symptoms above. My doctor says I'm fine physically. I'm so tired of this!

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

What you are describing are symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety is treated in one of three ways: with an antidepressant, a benzodiazepine, or cognitive behavioral psychotherapy (CBT). Benzodiazepines are not advised because they lead to addiction, tolerance, and withdrawal. Wellbutrin is technically an antidepressant, but it is not the best for anxiety -- much better would be an SSRI such as Zoloft or Lexapro. CBT would also be an excellent choice. Antipsychotics like Geodon will not help. Therefore I recommend either an SSRI, CBT, or both.
