What Causes Feeling Of Out Of Breath In Lying Position Post Partial Knee Replacement?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: Not about this problem as it has only just begun, but about knee surgery I must have after a partial knee replacement is causing trouble.
What is bothering me is that twice now over the past week I have had dreams in which I cannot draw breath. The dreams become more and more fraught as they continue until finally I am woken up and have to sit up so I can draw breath.
This morning I had the wit to take my BP which was 137/70 with a pulse of 84, I was shaky and still having to breathe deeply to try and calm down, so I also had two puffs of Ventolin.
I think I am putting it down to anxiety due to up coming surgery, although I am not consciously concerned, I've had enough operations in my life to be quite at ease about it, also including bi lateral mastectomies.
Do to trouble with my knee I've had an MRI, an Xray and a full bone scan.
So, right now I'm just wanting your thoughts on what is going on?

Brief Answer:
detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

Feeling out of breath in lying position and have to sit up to catch breath can be a sign of heart condition.Since this haven't happen before ,just these 2 episodes of past week, it is less likely to be from heart but It should be taken in consideration.
Another possible reason is high blood pressure .I would suggest to measure your blood pressure twice a day for some days.
-A possible cause can be sleep apnea .If you are snoring lately ,you have episodes of waking up with breathing difficulties, you feel sleepy and tired during day, then sleep apnea should be taken in consideration.
-Anxiety and panic disorder are common causes for such symptoms.

If you continue experiencing such symptoms ,you should consult a physician for examination because serious causes should be excluded first. You may need to run an ECG and heart ultrasound to exclude heart condition.

Hope this helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.I will be happy to help.

Kind regards,
