What Causes Fever, headache, body Chills, nausea And Lower Abdominal Pain?
Question: On Easter Sunday I went to hospital with following symptoms....Fever (101-103), severe headache, chills, nausea, and finally lower abdominal pain. I came home several days later and there are the symptoms since, chills, not able to stand cold, severe diahrea, not apatite, not only diahrea, but very loose stools, and not able to control the stools. I am extremely tired. What is going on?
Brief Answer:
Most likely the infection....
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
All your complaints are consistent with an infection. As most of those are gut related symptoms, it is most likely an enteric (intestinal) infection. It is prudent that we order tests to get to the root of the problem. I would order a complete hemogram, a stool test and widal titres as the first set of investigations. I believe you need to be started on antibiotic along with fever control medications.
I would like to know what was your doctor's opinion and what treatment is on?
Awaiting your reply...
Regards

I left the hospital with no answer. Blood tests were done, an MRI was done, special culture blood tests were done. All showed nothing. At the time I did not have the diarrhea, that came after I left the hospital. I was given an antibiotic in the hospital and sent home with one. That was it. The reason I am here checking with you, now, is that the Dr. in charge in the hospital wanted to send me home the next morning after I went in (Easter Sunday) with all symptoms still present and no tests were run as yet. Blood sugar tests were done and the blood sugar was rising steadily with nothing done about that. Blood pressure checks showed that my blood pressure was going down (91/64) and I normally have high blood pressure. Needless to say I was and am not happy with that DR.
Brief Answer:
Do not be worried...
Detailed Answer:
The picture is much clear now.
Generally some residual symptoms follow acute infective spell. The symptoms are partly from resolving illness, reduced nutrition during illness and the effects of antibiotic.
If your current blood sugars and blood pressure are in control, you need not be concerned now. Blood sugar and blood pressure fluctuations are normal during acute infection. Moreover BP number above 90/60 is considered normal these days. I have no intention to justify your doctor's action. But most often marginal fluctuations heal on its self.. No damages done...
Coming back to the current state, you most likely have antibiotic induced diarrhea. If you are still on it, it would be better to stop it after discussing with your GP. I would add pre and probiotic supplements to help your gut recover. Yoghurt is a natural probiotic. Drink lots of fluids along with electrolyte solution. Multivitamin pills will also help you get over the tiredness.
You seem to be on the path of recovery. I would not be concerned if you have no more fever and frequency of loose stool has reduced.
Hope I am clear to you. Let me know if you need clarifications.
