What Causes Fluctuating Blood Pressure Levels In An Elderly Man?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: I am watching my BP constantly. It will vary rather dramatically, from 120 over 70 to 145 over 80, both with an in rhythm BPM of about 55-60. Some times it will race to over 100, then after i sit a while it returns to a more moderate rate. I did feel better before I (foolishly) played golf in 95 degree weather in Fla. This was 10 days ago and I was totally wiped out from it.
Q. Could I have damaged my frail heart and should I just think of rest for now?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that your blood pressure and heart rate values are within the normal values.

Such raise in blood pressure and heart rate are normal during physical activity or anxiety.

Do you have any symptoms like shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, etc?

In such case I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a careful physical examination and some tests :

- a resting ECG and cardiac ultrasound
- a chest X ray study
- some blood lab tests ( complete blood count, blood glucose, thyroid hormone levels, PCR, sedimentation rate, blood electrolytes, kidney and liver function tests ).

An ambulatory 24 to 48 hours ECG monitoring may be necessary to examine your heart rhythm trends during the day and exclude possible cardiac arrhythmia.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above issues.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,
Dr. Iliri
