What Causes Fluid Discharge From Nipple?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Mar 2015
Question: Dear Doctor,

I hope you are doing well. Today I finally gave my blood test for prolactin check, so I hope the results will come in by tomorrow.

I just wanted to check if there was still any secretion from the nipples, since it has been around 10 days from the time I last spotted it. Unfortunately upon squeezing there was slight secretion (like a drop).

I am just wondering how many days it may take for the condition to resolve...!

I am in fact wondering if it is normal for ladies to have this one drop of secretion upon squeezing. I don't know if I always had it and never realized it until just 10 days ago when the secretion probably got aggravated due to some reason.

Please advice doctor.

Thanks and regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Explained.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
Well, such a discharge maybe common during pregnancy, breastfeeding or after a miscarriage - not otherwise.
It could be stress related as discussed, in which case, it might take a month sometimes for the condition to resolve.
If it is due to elevated prolactin, the condition would subside only after treatment.
Since you have given in the blood work, let us await the results before speculating.
Take care.

Dear Doctor,

The hospital called me today and informed me that the prolactin results were normal. Phew....!!! I was really worried. Now really happy and feeling relieved.

I just wanted to let you know about this. Thank you so much for always giving me your inputs and assuring me...considering the fact that I am a very over anxious patient.

Have a good day.

Brief Answer:
Glad to hear that.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
It is nice to know the results were normal.
I always had a hunch they would be.
The discharge is due to stress and travelling.
You can ignore it now, am sure it will go away with time.
And you are not an over anxious patient, you are a very intelligent, polite and insightful lady.
Wish you all the best.
Take care.

Dear Doctor,

Thank you for your reply and for the compliment.

When I look back at myself three years ago, my attitude towards my health was very different. I didn't get into such details with regards to small ups and downs with my health. And the thought of a tumor growing in my body was a far cry. In my mind it would only happen to someone else and never to me.

However, life taught me a good lessen when it was diagnosed. I am one of the lucky ones that the tumor turned out to be borderline. Anyhow, since then on, I have really become a bit paranoid. Any small change with my health, I start running to the doctor's office. Fortunately now, I found this website and I can at least post my questions and concerns to get good answers. Otherwise I keep searching the internet which gives a lot of information.

So I hope that this new year will really be hassle free for me.

Take care doctor and I will definitely keep in touch.

Brief Answer:
Take care too.

Detailed Answer:
That is not a paranoid tendency at all, it is just heightened awareness regarding your body and your health .
That is better than ignoring a niggling complaint only to find out it could have been diagnosed / treated much earlier.
I find you quite diligent, and am glad am able to assist you through this website.
Furthermore, the internet is a treasure trove of information, but it is not always correct or individualized.
At times, it might end up scaring you or confusing you too.
Just keep that in mind, it is always far better to seek a professional opinion, however small the issue.
Till next time, XXXX!
God bless.
