What Causes Fold Of Skin Over Sacrum With A Pilonidal Dimple?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: Is it possible to have a pilonidal dimple and coccxyl pain without it being a sinus or cyst. I have a fold or envelope of skin over my sacrum that therapists say looks like spina bifida, but I dont have spina bifida. I have a large bulging disk at T5/S1 due to the very sharp angle of my sacrum and complete loss of curvature in my lumbar spine. I have a considerbale rotation in my hips (R pelvis rotates forward with a tilt and sitting hgher than the left, with the left rotating backward also with a tilt. Now, years of physical therapy, chiropractic and even lots of acupuncture are only just keeping on top of the complex muscular skeletal pain I live with while they try to correct the structural problem and alleviate the muscle tension and sciatica in my lower spine and right leg. But no one has been able to tell me what this "fold" is over my sacrum or its signifigance. Now i believe after lots of research (as Im a Biological science major myself) I probably have an atypical pilonidal dimple, but no obvious symptoms of it being a cyst or sinus etc, EXCEPT i that spot is a major source of pain. Living in Australia with obscure medical problems is tricky because doctors have become complacant putting me in the "too hard basket" and/or the "fat, tired, stressed, mum syndrome" while medicare pays them buckets of maoney reguarless of whether I get improvement or not. ANd ask for medications for pain and "your drug seeking". Just wondering what you think.

Brief Answer:
Nerve related cause likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The fold of skin with a pilonidal dimple can be due to an occult cyst or an occult spina bifida. A nerve related cause is the likely reason of the pain that you are having.
If no spinal deformity or cyst has been detected on an MRI scan then any structural deformity is less likely. The medicines for neuropathic pain like Gabapentin and pregabalin can help you. It is best to consult a neurologist for a physical examination and to find the cause.
I hope this answers your query.
