Posted on Wed, 28 May 2014
Question: I have noticed within the last six-nine months or so that I am having trouble instantly recalling words or fumbling over words when talking. It feels like my brain is moving exceptionally fast, but my speech gets fumbled in trying to keep pace Ex... saying ROSCAL instead of RASCAL.....
......Also I am noticing where once I would use a large word in conversation, I dont recall the word and settle on a smaller word after a second or two.

Brief Answer:
May be due to stress/ anxiety/ drugs

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I read you query in detail and can understand your concern regarding forgetting and fumbling. I am a consulting psychiatrist and will try to help you understand your problem.

Generally, missing words, fumbling over them happens to everyone. But since in your situation, it is happening regularly and of recent onset, i can offer few explanations. The most common reason for it having is being stressed. When a person is anxious or stressed out, he generally remains preoccupied with many things. As such he develops lack of attention and concentration. This results in inability to focus on things at hand, which need immediate attention which results in forgetting things/ words.

Another common reason is use of any substance like alcohol, tobacco or any of the drugs (marijuana, etc.). You haven't mentioned if you have been using any of these. Use of such substances usually impair our brain's cognitive abilities which cause the problems.

At this stage, you can seek a psychiatric consultation to rule out any anxiety/ depression or in case you are using any substance. You can also start exercising daily. That will help not only with your weight and hypertension issues, but also with feeling better and ability to concentrate better.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Best wishes,

Dr. Sunil Gupta
