Why Am I Prescribed With Combination Of Pexep And Mirtaz For Depression?

Hi doctor, I am 31yrs diagnosed with GAD SAD and clinical depression sometime back. To cut it short I visited a psychiatrist who eventually regularized my medicines to 1 pexep CR 37.5 in the morning and 1 mirtaz 15 in the night. My question is.....dont both these medicines work by delaying the reuptake of serotonin in the brain cells? Then why two medicines, couldnt I have taken a double dose of either one of them? is this combination more effective in any manner or does something more than slowing down the reuptake of Serotonin? The bottom line is, why was I prescribed this combination, and not just one of these? And will I have to continue with both the medicines or can I taper down once of these? I have moved to a distant state and as of now I am not in touch with my doctor. Plz advise.

Hi,

Pexep CR and Mirtaz are both antidepressant medications that belong to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), respectively. Both these medications work by increasing the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain, which helps in reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

It is not uncommon for psychiatrists to prescribe a combination of antidepressant medications to patients who do not respond well to a single medication. The combination of Pexep CR and Mirtaz may be more effective in managing symptoms of depression and anxiety than either medication alone. Additionally, some patients may require lower doses of both medications in combination, which may reduce the risk of side effects that can occur with higher doses of a single medication.

It is important to note that antidepressant medications should not be stopped suddenly without medical supervision, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms and may also worsen the symptoms of depression and anxiety. If you are considering tapering off one of your medications, it is important to speak with your psychiatrist first to discuss a safe and appropriate tapering schedule.

In summary, the combination of Pexep CR and Mirtaz may be prescribed to some patients who do not respond well to a single medication, and it may be more effective in managing symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, it is important to consult with a psychiatrist before making any changes to your medication regimen.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
