What Causes Foul Odor In Urine And Stool?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Mar 2017
Question: I am a healthy 64 year old woman. I have been experiencing for around 2 weeks a foul odor in urine and stool. Now I am experiencing a scent that seems to be emanating from my body on and off. It is not flatulence. I am experiencing no other symptoms and feel fine. The only thing different is that about 2 months ago I was prescribed .5 mg of dutasteride for hair loss by a dermatologist specializing in this area. I stopped taking it about a week ago. Not taking any other meds.

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome

I appreciate your concern

Both stool and urine need to be tested. If pus cells or rbcs or wbcs are found in significant quantity then sample should be sent for culture sensitivity testing and treatment with antibiotics initiated, empirically. The odor can be a result of the medication which you were using as it can be an adverse effect of dutasteride. If stopping the medication doesn't result in resolution of the odor then further work up including metabolic profile and blood counts can be advised in consultation with your doctor.
