What Causes Foul Smell From Mouth After A Knee Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Dec 2014
Question: I am just recovering from knee replacement surgery and coming off pain med, tramadol, unsuccessfully. suffering from fateag and insomnia. Also this extreme sweet smell emanating from my mouth that no one seem to understand. It is a horrendous odor.
I am a heart patient & have a stent. The lack of sleep leaves me tired and short of breath. I also have sarcoidosis with clean CT scans, treated with QVAR. Just started with .5 Zanex yesterday.
Have any clues what this might be??

Brief Answer:
GERD/bad teeth/chronic tonsillitis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

Having a bad smell coming from your mouth might be related to:
1. Anesthesia applied during intervention: was it general or spinal? Usually, general anesthesia is related to bad smelling.

2. GERD/reflux, upper endoscopy is advised to rule it out.

3. Bad teeth

4. chronic tonsillitis

You can discuss these options with your doctor. I also advise to keep a good oral hygiene.

All the best!

Anesthesia was local block

I had my tonsils removed as a child. Teeth are fine too.

I've had been taking prescription Pepsin in conjunction with the tramadol, just stopped taking it today. I had indigestion once after eating out for the first time from my heart attack in 2002. Now I feel I may have it again, but should the Pepsin prevent that?

This sweet odor is really strong!

Thank You

Brief Answer:
Pepsin does not prevent heart attack...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Ok, then, from what you are describing, the sweet odor might be related to changes in blood sugar level, gastric issues (GERD), cholecyst problems.

Pepsin is an enzyme used to aid your GI tract to digest proteins. It has nothing to know with heart attack, and it does not have a function to prevent heart attack.

All the best!
