What Causes Frequent Loose Stool And Tenesmus?

Question: Hi, I have a 5 month old baby who is 100% on formula. He has been having frequent loose stool and tenesmus..This started a day and a half ago and I noticed that whenever he eats then he asses the loose stool.Laboratory examination shows that he has 3 to 5 pus cells,What do i do?

Let me assure you that you have nothing to worry. There is a normal phenomenon called gastrocolic reflex which may make a child pass stool after each feed. Here the loading of the stomach acts as a trigger for movement of the colon which triggers passage of the stool. It is normal and may persist in many infants. You need not worry about it. Moreover, for a child of this age, passing stool 10 times a day is as normal as passing stool once in 10 days and in neither case you need to worry.

The number of pus cells in stool indicates that there is no bacterial infection.

Just let things continue as they are.
