What Causes Frequent Urination After TURP Surgery?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Feb 2017
Question: Good morning. I had TURP surgery 5 and 1/2 weeks ago and one side effect I still have is the urgency to urinate a lot especially at night. It seems every 2 or 3 hours after I urinate I have to go do it again. I am not getting a good night's sleep because of it. Another side effect is I have noticed since the surgery is that I seem to be having a lot more cramps. Is this related to losing too much potassium and magnesium through my urine?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking HCM.

Detailed answer:
You had TUR-P 5 and 1/2 weeks ago.

The symptom that persist is urgency to urinate.
Having a lot of cramps lately.

In every patient, that undergoes TUR-P at the place where the prostatic tissue was, there is a lot of inflammation. This inflammation is the cause most of the times have the urge to urinate, or frequent urination. It is normal and will go away in a few more weeks. Usually it can take up to 2 or 3 month for symptom to vanish. You can use ibuprofen twice per day to lower the inflammation for about 5 days. It might help with the urge to urinate, and burning sensation if you have any.

Also another reason is urinary tract infection. When was the last time you did an urine test. If there is an infection,it can cause the symptom that you have.

I suggest you do an urine test to see if there is signs of infection, and if it results positive you need to start antibiotics like ciprofloxacine family for ex.

About the cramps: Usually, patients that have done TUR-P are advice to drink plenty of liquids. It might lower your potassium levels. For that we recommend to have fruit that have plenty of potassium like banana, or avocadoes , kiwi ect
It will replace the lost potassium and also will soften the stools ,which is healthy for your colon.
