Question: Good Day Doctor,

My name is XXXXXXX I am 41 year old female with Turners Syndrome living in the Caribbean Island of Trinidad. A few years ago (2011- 2012), I got the flu, but noticed my breathing did not return to normal. Went to the doctor who told me that I was developing asthma, he prescribed an inhaler and allergy medication. I used the inhaler only for one month, but not certain it worked. My breathing improved, but went to another doctor for some joint pains, mentioned to him about the breathing and after his examination he told me I was not asthmatic. I went about for a long time feeling almost completely better, being active and not fatigued. Now over the last couple weeks I have noticed that I need to take a lot more deeper breaths and yawning a lot. Please help me figure out why this is and what can I do about it . Thanks much!

Hello Dr. Huuda,

I only used the inhaler for only 1 month. Have not had any blood test or Xrays done yet. There may be slight palpitations or more so a heaviness in the chest. There is a lot of Sahara Dust in the atmosphere presently.

The strange thing is I am not breathless or fatigued by physical activities. The Deep breathing exercises help a little bit.

Thanking you for your time, and looking forward to hearing from you.

Brief Answer:
This could be Asthma or COPD

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your reply
Since you are not having breathlessness due to physical activity so This could be COPD or Asthma
Palpitations and heaviness may occur during an episode of asthma or ' air hunger'

To be on safe side, its advisable to rule out heart disease first So please consult your doctor for physical examination and a battery of tests like blood for hemoglobin, CBC, AEC ( absolute eosinophil count), ESR and an EKG or chest X ray and Pulmonary function test about which your doctor knows.

Try to identify and avoid the trigger like allergens for such an asthmatic attack
You can use mask during an dusty environment and try to stay indoor

Hope this answers your question
Best wishes
