What Causes Hand Tremors And Lack Of Appetite?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Oct 2015
Question: Hello,
I am a 22 year old female. I have always been pretty healthy, no problems other than recently I got my blood work done and they said my cholesterol was borderline high. But lately, I just haven't felt right.

Lately, I've felt very shaky for some odd reason. My hands just feel shaky, and along with my neck- which is causing me a lot of stress and anxiety because I don't know what's going on. I have also noticed, I do not have much of an appetite at all. I'm just feeling very shaky all day, but for no reason. And it's causing me a lot of anxiety because I just feel like something's weird since I have never in my life felt this way.

I went to my doctor a couple weeks ago and we did some basic lab work just for a check up and everything came back normal besides my cholesterol being borderline high. At that time, I wasn't having these symptoms. I don't know what could be wrong? I thought it might of had something to do with my menstrual cycle/ovulating because the week that I was on my menstrual cycle I felt very shaky and weird, but the week after it was over I felt fine. But then maybe 12 days after my menstrual cycle I started to feel shaky and weird again with no appetite. Any ideas? I am definitely thinking of seeing my PCP if my symptoms do not subside.

Thank you so much in advance!

Brief Answer:
I do not think your symptoms are related to your period or hormones

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Many women tend to blame health symptoms on woman-related issues before thinking of medical problems. I highly doubt the symptoms you are describing have anything to do with your hormones.

Feeling "shaky" can have a number of causes because it is a pretty non-specific symptom. However, the one thing you mentioned- lack of appetite, leads me to question- Are you eating and drinking enough? Being dehydrated can make you feel weak, and low blood sugar can make you feel shaky.

When your bloodwork was done at your primary physician, did they test your thyroid hormone? High thyroid hormone can make you feel shaky and restless and give you a decreased appetite as well.

If you are a heavy drinker, withdrawal from alcohol can make you feel shaky as well.

And regarding anxiety- if you are experiencing a lot of stress, can also make you shaky. Your fears about your condition may actually be making it worse.

I agree with you that a visit back to your PCP may be the best way to figure this out. In the meantime, make sure you drink enough water and eat healthy snacks throughout the day even if you don't have much of an appetite. And really try not to worry- I am sure your doctor will be able to help you find an accurate diagnosis.

But I doubt that this is caused by any specifically female problem.

I hope I was able to answer your question adequately and that this information was helpful. If you need anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
