Hello dear, welcome to HCM forum.
Thanks for posting to us.
Ii will be fine if you clear few more points in this regard.
How long you are having this problem?
Is there any associated symptoms like pain?
Is the prominence constant allways, or does it become larger on standing up and smaller on laying down?
Can you push back the swelling inside with hands?
Does it enlarge during coughing?
In this case, we have to look for any hernia.
It will be fine if you can get back to your doctor for present evaluation.
After clinical examination, you may be asked for basic blood tests and an USG abdomen.
Hope this answer will help.
Kindly follow up.
Thank you.

the follow up answers to the questions suggested are
1) I have been gaining weight over several years especially in the belly area as i got older and less active in sports.
2)There is no pain at all associated with this situation.
3) The prominence is the same standing or lying down.
4) I would not say push back the swelling but i can push the belly all around or in and out as well as using both hands and holding big portions of the belly.
5) There is no sign of anything unusual when coughing

Brief Answer:
Hernia unlikely; try lifestyle modification.
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, Thanks for the information given.
From the description, it is less likely a hernia; more likely it is subcutaneous fat deposits in the lower abdominal wall, which is commonly seen in obese individuals.
After confirming the diagnosis by a physical examination, this can be managed with lifestyle modification alone(procedures like liposuction are complicated and not advised).
Following are the suggestions:
Cut down the amount of calories and fat(especially non veg) in the diet.
Include more fruits and veggies.
Try doing regular moderate exercise.
Try avoiding alcohol as it significantly promotes fat deposits.
A dietitian can guide you better.
Hope I have answered your query.
