Posted on Mon, 19 Jan 2015
Question: I have had a swollen submandibular gland on the right side for about 9 months. It is rock hard and firm but has not changed in size. I also have been sinuses which drain. The gland wich is only one is about the size of my ring finger nail and perfectly round and smooth . What is the chance this may be cancer.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be cancer. USG + Doppler and FNAC will settle the diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. This swelling is likely to represent an enlarged lymph node (draining the sinuses) or a submandibular gland swelling.

2. Get a Neck Ultrasound (USG) and and FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) done. These investigations will settle the issue.

3. This is unlikely to be cancer as there is no growth in the last few months.

4. Further treatment is based on the findings of these investigations.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Yes, this lowers the possibility of cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. These investigations are still advised as the will conclusively settle the issue.

2. A smooth round swelling is in favor of a lymph node, cyst or benign cause.

3. Any such swelling must be investigated and the need for treatment be decided as per the results.

4. With no family history of cancer and limited use of skoal, the risk is even lower.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Yes, you should go ahead with the investigations and treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. It is always better to get these swellings investigated and treated.

2. Being concerned helps to avoid ignoring health issues. Long standing swellings can pose their own problems.

3. This is a swelling and not an imagined medical problem as is common in hypochondriacs.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
