What Causes Headache, Body Pain, Reddened Tonsils And Neck Pain?
Question: 19 year old college granddaughter just finished stressful exams. Not much sleep lately. Has been complaining last 3 days of headache, body ache. A couple weeks ago had white-striped reddened tonsils...looked much like strep. On antibiotics, strep test negative. Mono test showed possible mono previously. Slept 2 hours this afternoon, led active class for kids a local Y tonight. Ok afterwards, now that she's settling down for night, complaining of worsening symptoms. Doesn't touch chin to chest...complains of pain in back of neck. Hmmm, meningitis? Mono? Should we go to ER now at 10:30 pm? I am grandfather, Ph.D. in biomedical physiology.
Brief Answer:
She need early evaluation....
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am sorry about this condition.
Not all pain in the back of neck is due to meningitis. Meningeal inflammation (meningitis) classically presents with fever. However, the fact the she has headache for the last 3 days and has worsened now is bothering me too. Therefore I will recommend an early evaluation. If possible take her to the ER.
If you are unable to visit the ER, I suggest she take over the counter available pain medications such as advil and rests. Stress related headaches generally settle down with pain killers. If the pain medication doesn't help, I will recommend she sees the doctor right away.
Hope it helped.
Regards
