What Causes Heartburn, Choke, Productive Cough And Indigestion?

Posted on Fri, 13 May 2016
Question: I woke up with some slight heartburn that made me choke and cough alittle. Slight burning and extremely foul tasting yellow phlemp discharge. I'm on day two of taking nexium for chronic reflux I seem to have at night, the only other thing I took today was a chewable gas tablet.. Could this be caused by the nexiium or gas tablet ? Or has the nexium not have a chance to work yet because it's day two... The weird tasting phlem almost tast like fish oil..and was yellow in color.. I can't think of anything I ate that would bring that.mi only had a few pieces of pizza for dinner

Brief Answer:
Indigestion with regurgitation or reflux

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in Healthcaremagic.com.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
You have chronic indigestion and have started to take nexium or esomeprazole only recently.
In chronic indigestion issues, it takes time to get results. You have to keep taking the medicines for 15-20 days and gradually, you can realise its action.
What you had is probably regurgitation of your undigested meal that caused burning and foul taste. In patients of indigestion, this is not very uncommon.
Nexium or gas tablets are probably not the cause of that. And yes, nexium has not have got enough time to act to counter chronic reflux.

So alongwith nexium, I will suggest you the following-

Diet modification like lots of water and dietary fibers orally, avoiding alcohol and smoking if any and avoiding spicy rich food.
Chewing your food properly before swallowing.
Regular exercise like brisk walking, swimming, cycling etc which enhances metabolism.

Hope I have answered your question.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.
