Posted on Thu, 18 Feb 2016
Question: I'm scheduled to go in for an exam to discuss my options for a hysterectomy on the 21st. I have severe heavy periods with heavy clotting and have to wear an adult diaper to catch all the flow for 6 to 14 days has been like this for several years after I had my tubal ligation I am going in on the 21st to discuss my options for a hysterectomy with the doctor but I am worried that because I might be starting my period or be on my period when the history hysterectomy is scheduled that he may postpone the procedure do I have to worry about this or is this something that they do normally when a woman is on there period

Brief Answer:
It is possible to do the hysterectomy even during the period.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I'm sorry you have had such a difficult time with menorrhagia. My understanding is that menstruation does not require postponing a hysterectomy. The uterus and it's blood vessels and attachments are tied off and excessive bleeding cauterized during the operation, and there is a suction device (a bit like the dentist uses) for any bleeding that needs cleaning up during surgery. You can ask your doctor about the the procedures used when you see her or him. But I don't think this will be a problem.

I hope this answers your question. If I can provide further information or clarification, please let me know.

Good luck, and I hope you are doing much better soon.
