What Causes Heavy Menstruation And Severe Pain 8 Months After Pregnancy?
Hope you are doing well.
I have consulted you online during my pregnancy. It has been 11 months since I delivered via c section. I resumed my periods after my baby turned 8 months. I have been having regular periods since then. However, they are very very heavy. I have to change napkins every 1 to 2 hours. Also, they are extremely painful during the first two days.
Before the last period, I had severe pain on the 14th day (ovulation day) which lasted that whole day. I was unable to even get up from bed.
I am still breastfeeding my baby and am planning to continue.
Please let me know if this is normal to have such heavy and painful periods. Also, do let me know if I should go visit doctor and if I need to take any scan.
Thanks.
Need a sonogram.
Detailed Answer:
Hi Ms. Banerjee,
Thanks for posting your query. Nice to hear from you again.
Usually, after a delivery, the uterus remains somewhat bulky and this can lead to slightly heavier periods. As you have described, you are experiencing very heavy periods and this calls for a clinical evaluation.
I would ask you to go for a clinical visit and also get a sonogram to see what is wrong. If nothing abnormal is found with local examination, it could be the hormones or anemia. Any infections also can thus be recognized and treated.
Please improve your nutrition as it is a general tendency to neglect proper diet while taking care of the baby. See that you get sufficient sleep.
You can continue feeding the baby until one year if you can. In addition, also add other feeds as suggested by the pediatrician. I know you will get adequate baby care and I need not suggest anything, but, please get all vaccinations in time.
You can take an antispasmodic to relieve the severe pain. You may also need styptics, but use them with caution as you are feeding the baby. Avoid them before a feed and make sufficient gap.
Hope I have answered your query. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.
regards,
Shanti.V.
