What Causes Hematuria?
Question: I had a urinary tract infection approximately 6 weeks ago. Resolved with Ciprofloxacin. Repeat urinalysis and culture were clear. I am 59 years old, female. Approximately 10 days ago, had routine, yearly blood work and urinalysis done. The UA showed blood in urine (no gross hematuria, no more symptoms). Culture showed the same. However, urine cytology was negative for malignancy. (Awaiting my labs now).
Question: My nurse practitioner suggested I go for renal ultrasound, followed by referral to a urologist. Should have ultrasound fairly soon, but I cannot get in to see a recommended urologist until October 22nd. Is this a cause for concern to wait this long? I am extremely anxious - also what are the chances that this is cancer? Thank you.

Most common causes of microscopic hematuria ( Blood that is not seen in urine but only detected by microscopic examination ) are -
Kidney stone disease,
cystitis ( urine infection)
glomerulonephritis
rarely any urothelial tumors.
Generally malignancy or tumors will have episodes of visible hematuria.
Ultrasound is the next logical investigation which will give a lot of information on the possible causes of hematuria.
since your appointment is quite late, keep an eye on the urine color- if you see blood in urine or you have fever with burning sensation in urine please inform your physician about in.
And yes , do not worry, chances of malignancy are less.
Just to inform you - smoking is a risk factor for malignancy- so avoid if taking.
