What Causes High TSH Level?
Question: my brother kid age is 3 years 5 months . We did Thriod test .
T3 & T4 level are normal but TSH reading slightly high
At the time of birth we did test
All three are normal
my brother kid age is 3 years 5 months . We did the Thriod test today morning and doctor suggested us to conduct the test again
T4& T5 are normal and TSH reading is slightly high

TOTAL T3 : 173.7 ng/dl
TOTAL T4 : 8.81 µg/dl
FREE T3 : 4.72 pg/mL
FREE T4 : 1.31 ng/dl
As per ranges given in lab report, all the above values, except TSH, are in normal range. TSH is higher than normal.
TSH at birth was 3.3 µlU/ml, lower side of normal range.
The test was part of investigation of reasons for speech delay.
Mile stones : Flipping over : 5 months
Crawling : 9 months
Walking : 1 year 5 months
Speech : Not speaking yet. Identifies objects by pointing. Follows some directions.

Kid is suffering from a condition called as Subclinical hypothyroidism(SCH).
Subclinical hypothyroidism(SCH) is characterized by a normal total or free T4 level and a mildly elevated TSH (typically 5–10 µlU/ml).
It is common in children.
Several recent pediatric studies indicate that progression of SCH to overt hypothyroidism (OH) is uncommon and that over a period of several years, elevated TSH usually either normalizes or persists but does not increase.
Since few cases of pediatric Subclinical hypothyroidism progress to overt hypothyroidism,its treatment can be deferred and periodic follow-up testing is the preferred strategy.
In my opinion,your kid only require regular follow up tests and there is no need of medicines at present.
If TSH > 20 µlU/ml then patient require immediate medications.
Developmental milestones of your kid is absolutely normal and there is no need to worry.
