What Causes Horizontal Lines With Some Deformity Across Fingernails?
Question: HI, In the last 5 years I have been developing horizontal lines with some deformity across my fingernails. They are also splintering and have become bumpy, impossible to grow out. I take Biotin everyday, have no issued other than treated hypothyroidism and am 56 years old. Could this be metals poisoning?

Brief Answer:
Suspect heavy metal-arsenic poisoning
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for giving me this opportunity to address your query.
Nail changes are often nonspecific.Transverse lines are seen in heavy metal poisoning(arsenic).Hypothyroidism makes your nails brittle.I were to examine, send nail scraping for analysis/staining if necessary.Do you have any skin discoloration/hair problems?Could you please upload a photo of your nails if possible?

Thanks- I did recently have my metals level checked with a urine test- they showed some extra arsenic, but also bromine and lead, the lead being 3 times what is considered normal. I am an artist, do not work now with lead, grew up in Los Angeles before unleaded gas. I live on Lake Pontchartrain, which is fed by the Mississippi, and our house has a well for water.
I have started chelation, only one treatment so far- are you familiar with this and recommend it?

Brief Answer:
Few precautions below
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for writing me back.
Heavy metal poisoning cannot be reversed but precautions can be taken to minimise the exposure.I am glad that you have started chelation therapy which keeps the toxins at bay.You may continue as well.I were to also suggest a few tips for further lower the risk.
Arsenic precautions:
Maintain a high-fiber diet. Fiber binds with arsenic to eliminate it from the body.
Eat foods high in sulphur - eggs, onions, beans, legumes, and garlic. Sulphur helps rid the body of arsenic
Lead precautions:
Lead-based paint in older housing or stored in soil and dust (50% of lead intake is from indoor dust.
Do not drink or eat from ceramic ware that contains lead-based paints and glazes. If you’re unsure about your dishes and cups, choose glassware instead.
In addition avoid smoking and alcoholic beverage.Drink purified/mineral water.
Hope this will help you.
