Problem under incision that does not show anything wrong on C.T I have tried for about 2 yrs to get a dx because my side is huge ,can't functio .A recent CT finally showed "advanced atrophy of the l. Rectus abdominis, likely deformation atrophy". This surgeon says too risky to fix. My side is huge . I can barely do ADl's. I have neuropathy from back sx. I all all the time. Had surgery yesterday fx's of waist & bones in hand. 65 yo w f who wants to work! I thought it was a hernia and reported it during all up visits. Referred to everyone.

Brief Answer:
Surgery is the best treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The huge bulging on one side of abdomen that you have is due to atrophy of rectus abdominis. Any strengthening exercises can correct only a minor weakness of the muscle. The atrophied muscle can only be fixed surgically.
Your surgeon can best assess regarding your fitness for surgery. In case you are not fit for surgery then using an abdominal belt for holding the atrophied muscles is the only option left.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

Thanks for your answer. MY question is what kind of surgery? The surgeon who finally identified the problem seemed reluctant to do surgery to correct so would I be a candidate for a more superficial fix i.e. reconstructive plastic surgery? Is this a frequent post surgery problem? Other than the plastic surgeon, what surgical specialty would handle this type problem? What type surgeon would I consult? THANKS.

Brief Answer:
Mesh fixation will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Only a superficial fix is not likely to help as the muscle has atrophied. It is not a usual problem after surgery. This can happen due to a nerve injury. A mesh fixation will be a better option and will help in preventing a relapse. A plastic surgeon or a general surgeon should be able to fix the problem well.
Hope my answer is helpful.
