What Causes Increased Pressure In Eyes?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Jul 2015
Question: My daughter is 60 years old and her last two eye examinations show that the pressure in her eyes is higher than normal. There is no glaucoma in neither my family or her father's family. What would cause her pressure to be too high and is there anything natural that she could take that might bring it down? Her specialist has prescribed some eyedrops which she is using and will have another checkup in a couple of weeks.

Brief Answer:
Primary open angle glaucoma , continue eye drops, regular follow up

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The drug of choice for open angle glaucoma or a raised intraocular pressure are prostaglandin eye drops i.e latanoprost. Beta blockers like timolol and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors such as dorzolamide are also prescribed to lower the pressure. The exact cause of primary open angle glaucoma is not known. Migraine headaches, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension are risk factors that can predispose one to develop glaucoma. The only life style change that has had some evidence w.r.t lowering of intraocular pressure is regular moderate exercise. There are no natural products or supplements that have been proven to lower IOP or treat glaucoma effectively. If there is progressive vision deterioration then a neuro ophthalmologist should be consulted. She should also continue the eye drops uninterrupted for optimum outcome. Follow up eye visits should also be done regularly to monitor any progression or improvement.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
