What Causes Intermittent Rectal Bleeding?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Oct 2015
Question: I have had rectal bleeding off and on since january. In January they believed it was due to a fissure, then in July I was supposed to have a colonoscopy to rule out anything but that got moved to november. I am seeing a GI doctor this friday. My question is- I have been having more bleeding for that past week and a half but not more than a teaspoon at most once a day with bowel movement. The blood is always bright red and streaked on one side of the stool with most on the paper, and maybe occurring 5 out of the past 8 days. Could I possibly be anemic from this type of blood loss? I feel okay, and I know online nothing can be ruled out, but would you consider it a safe course of action to wait until my appointment or does my level of bleeding make it an emergency that should be checked rapidly. I was checked for anemia in July and the blood work came back fine, showing no signs of anemia.

Brief Answer:
Anal fissure

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Your symptoms are suggestive of anal fissure.
You will get benefited by taking sitz bath, high fiber diet, fiber supplements like metamucil, lot of fluids, stool softener and topical diltiact/nifedipine.

Fissure can cause bleeding as in your case. It is usually a milder form of bleeding.
Anemia due to fissure is less common as it takes months of this milder bleed to cause anemia. But because of the symptoms individuals get treated well before they become anemic.
You were not anemic in JULY. And it is less likely that you would have become anemic in 2 months time now.

I hope that answers your query.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.
