What Causes Irregular Menstrual Bleeding After Starting Birth Control Pills?
I've recently started taking XXXXXXX birth control pills and just finished my first pack. I took the first pill before my period started thinking my period is coming late so I thought I will do the sunday start. I've spotted for around 3 days before my period with cramps. On my 4th day my period started, I was quite confused because I thought if I start birth control my period will be delayed until I'm off the pills. My normal cycle is only for 4 days or less but this time it was for a blunt 7 days with extreme pain (I never feel pain) ! I got extremely worried because I never got it for this long, and after that till this day I've been spotting and getting brown discharge all the time when I wipe or sometimes stains my underwear. My last pill was on Saturday and I'm going to start my next pack on Sunday. My concern is;
Is it normal to have this amount of brown discharge on a daily base? Is it just my hormones playing around?
And my last wipe has a bit of blood in it, is my period starting early? (9 days early)
I'm already stressed because of my brown discharge, I already ruined so many underwear, it's very irritating and I'm very embarrassed by it.
Will I ever have my clear discharge back?
I'm sorry but I'd like to add that my period was extremely heavy! (I used to have a very light period.)
Hormonal imbalance should be ruled out.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
XXXXXXX should be taken either on day one of the menstrual period or the first Sunday after the onset of the period. Also, during the first month of pill usage, additional contraception is needed.
Hormonal imbalances are the usual finding with the majority of the pills during the initial months. This usually clears up as the body gets adjusted to the medication. Thus, irregular menstruation, continuous spotting, breakthrough bleeds, heavy and early periods are experienced in the early phase of pill usage.
In the current scenario, since you have had a normal period superimposed on the spotting, you may start the pill again for the second cycle. If the spotting does not subside even with proper pill intake, you should see a specialist for further evaluation.
Once the hormone imbalance is cleared, your vaginal discharge will return to normal.
Hope your query has been clarified. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.
