What Causes Itchiness At The Incision Site Of Abdominal Hernia?

Question: a friend of mine is recuperating from abdominal hernia surgery done on september 16, 2014. The incision looks fine but he said he is having a lot of itchiness. He also was prescribed potassium which he is taking orally. He believes this is due to healing of the tissues. Is this normal?

Dear Mr XXXXXXX
Surgical incision is basically a clean wound created by Surgeon. It heals in the same way as any other wound. There is inflammation of the wound and release of whereas mediators during wound healing. It could be associated with itching and is quite common. There is. I reason to be worried off if the following criteria are fulfilled
1. Surgical site infection ruled out
2. No discharge from wound
3. No pain or tenderness at surgical site
Local application of coconut oil or moisturising cream will be helpful
Take care
