What Causes Itching Sensation And Redness Around Insect Bite?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, I believe I was bit by an insect about three weeks ago it could have happened when I was on vacation in bahamas or before I left home. The bite became infected (most likely because I scratched it) but the redness around the bite has not gone away and its been a couple weeks. It doesn't hurt, it only itches slightly every now and then. I have been keeping it bandaged with neosporin but it doesn't seem to be going away. Does this sound like cellulitis and does it sound like it may need to be treated with antibiotics stronger than neosporin?

Brief Answer:
it seems like cellulitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.
After reading your post, it seems that you might be having cellulitis. A clinical evaluation by your doctor will help in planning medical management. You may need an antibiotic along with an anti inflammatory for healing. Antihistamine can be taken for relief from itching.
I hope this is helpful to you. If you have any further query, I will be happy to help.
Thanks.

Did you look at the picture I uploaded? I'm trying to avoid going to a doctor if possible. The redness is only about an inch in diameter and the redness seems to be lessening but still hasn't gone completely away. If you think it's necessary to see a doctor I will I just wanted to make sure you looked at the image since you didn't mention it.

Brief Answer:
yes, I have seen the image.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your response. I have already seen the image. One thing more I want to mention is that don't bandage it. Apply the ointment and keep it open. You can take an antihistamine like Fexofenadine 120 mg once a day along with an anti inflammatory like Ibuprofen for relief. If the symptoms persists, you can consult your doctor for planning further medical management.
I hope this answers your query. If you have any further doubts, please mention.
Thanks.
