What Causes Itchy Rash On Legs, Forehead And Arms?

Question: Hello Doctor - I am 63 years old - overweight like many - anyway - 2 days ago I wake up and im Itchy all over - legs have red rash type color all over my 2 legs - and a little on my forehead - I showed a friend today and she said it was probably Shingles? I had the chicken pox as a kid - now out of the blue - i have a serious looking red rash and its itchy - i try not to scratch it.
I did have the chicken pox vacine as a kid and I think i had chicken pox - definately the mumps
I went on line and saw samples of what shingles looks like - and it looks like what i have all over my legs - red rash - red blotches - etc - is this contagious?

Brief Answer:
Simple allergic dermatitis; No possibility of Shingles.
Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,
Welcome back and thanks for posting your pictures along with important details.
I can understand your concern for the rash and the possibility of Shingles in the same.
After analysis of the pictures and correlating with your details let me first reassure you that the rash is not related to shingles.
The very first and important information to provide you is that - shingles occurs only one time in life. It begins as multiple blisters on one side of body only and specifically at one region only. The blisters remain for a period of around 7-14 days and then forms scab which falls off in next 2 weeks.
In your case the rash is present over legs forehead and is itchy rather than painful. So none of the criteria fit into the diagnosis of shingles.
After analyzing the picture and correlating with the details I can make out the possibility of simple allergic dermatitis or in simple words allergy to contact of some irritant material rather than shingles.
You can meet a family physician or preferably a dermatologist to get it treated at the earliest. Till that time there are certain suggestion which you can follow:
1. Avoid direct sunlight and hot – humid climate.
2. Wear cotton clothes and avoid synthetic clothes. The clothes should cover the entire neck and upper chest area so that direct sunlight should not be evident over the affected area.
3. Stay in cool environment(preferably AC) and avoid sweating.
4. Take two time bath once in morning and at night time which will soothe your skin and prevent the aggravation of the problem
5. Do not Pinch pop or squeeze or rub any area.
6. Do not use any deodorants or any cosmetics over and near the affected area.
7. Do cold compression over the affected area. Take a wet towel soaked in cold water and apply it for 5-10 minutes for 3-4 times a day.
For the part of treatment I suggest my patients to follow:
1. Apply over the counter available calamine lotion on the affected area in day and afternoon time. Apply it in very thin layer.
2. Apply plane cortisone or fluticasone or Mometasone cream in a thin layer in morning and at night time. Apply in a very thin layer so that it should not be visible to naked eye. You can apply it for 7 days and then stop it after that.
3. If there is any irritation or itching is present then can take tablet “Loratadine” or "Deslotatadine" tablet by mouth up to three to four times also if the itching is more.
You can meet a doctor and apprise him/her with my suggestions.
I hope these information's will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help.
"Wish you good health"
