What Causes Itchy Sore Red Marks On Leg?

Question: I was running cross country and afterwards had a small red mark on my leg. It became itchy and sore a couple of days later and the area became swollen. I did not feel a bite or sting but I assume this must have been it.
The swelling went down and I thought that to be the end of it. A week later the itching started again and the area swelled. The skin is very red and walking is uncomfortable due to the swelling. I saw a doctor 1.5 days ago who gave me antibiotics and a steroid cream to use. The swelling has however worsened and spread further across my foot and leg and the cream is not helping the itching. Should i be worried or is this normal to get worse before it gets better?
