What Causes Joints Pain While On Humira For Spondylitis?

Question: Hello, I am a 38 year old female with a history of Crohn's Disease and Spondylitis. I have been taking Humira for about 11 months with successful results. Over the past month or so, I have noticed that I am getting random joint pain and muscle aches about 2-3 days after taking a Humira dose. The pain and aches last about 4-5 days, and are not always in the same location. The locations have been fingers, back, hips, knees, legs, and elbows. Could this be caused by the Humira or something else? Thank you.

Good evening

Thank you for writing on health care magic

Well, it is a bit difficult to say whether it is due to Humira or not, but since you are getting a flare of pains after it s administration, it may be due to the drug.

Most of the times the mechanism behind joint pains and muscle aches after prolonged use of drugs like Humira/Infliximab are the autoantibody formation known as HACA antibodies. It s like your body gets immune to these drugs and forms antibodies against it . So whenever you are given an injection, the antibodies act against the drug and the joint pains and aches are more of an allergic reaction to it.

Since you are in States, these antibodies are measured there and you can get it checked.

Secondly, I would like to know if there are any swellings as well or is it just pain?
ALso are you on Methotrexate along with Humira?

You can discuss this issue with your Rheumatologist once and maybe ask him to give you premedication with little dose of steroids and avil

I hope the information was useful
