What Causes Kidney Failure After A Mild Heart Attack?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Apr 2014
Question: I do not have a history of kidney disease. 6 weeks ago I was hospitalized for a period of 1 month with Pneumonia and while in the hospital suffered a mild heart attack and had stents placed. Now I have a creatinine level of 4.4. Did the infection cause the kidneys to fail and is there a possibility of recovery?

Brief Answer: Multiple factors involved... Detailed Answer: You may not have a history of kidney disease, however if you were never evaluated anytime earlier, there is a possibility that there was some preexisting weakness in your kidney. Usually there are barely any symptoms of kidney disease until 70 - 80 % of kidney function is lost. Presence of heart disease itself is a risk factor for developing kidney disease. Though your heart condition was detected now it would have started many years before to have progressed to this stage where you required stents. Both pneumonia and the XXXXXXX (contrast agent) used for angiography and stent placement can worsen kidney function temporarily especially if there is pre-existing kidney disease (known or unknown). The effects are usually temporary and the kidney functions should improve to previous level, depending on the level of kidney function before these events happened. Usually recovery may continue over a period of 4 -6 weeks, sometime even upto 3 months. It is important at this time, to avoid any painkillers like - ibuprofen, diclofenac, eterocoxib etc as they would hamper recovery and may even worsen the kidney function. Any new infection or stress on the body can again delay recovery or worsen kidney function. Warm regards
