Brief Answer:
Hernia or lipoma are most probable. Ultrasound should be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Lump in this location can be a hernia or soft tissues benign lesion (lipoma).
Hernia gives a lump which is more visible when standing and coughing. Lump should get less visible when lying down.
Lipoma is usually soft, rounded and painless lesion. It does not turn into a cancer.

The best way to find out what it is, is to have soft tissues ultrasound done.

Hernia should be fixed with a surgery. Lipoma can be left alone.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you for your answer.
How long would I be off work after the operation if it is a hernia?

Brief Answer:
Few weeks if mesh will be inserted.

Detailed Answer:
It depends how large it is and if the mesh will be inserted or not.
With mesh inserted, few weeks and you can get back to work.
Without mesh, if you lift heavy objects at work, you should avoid lifting for 3 months.

Regards.
