Question: I have a granddaughter who is 3 and talks very little .. and is NOT good at interacting with other children. She can sing the abc's and count to about 15. She recognizes all her letters ,,, She was delayed crawling, walking .. I am wondering if this is normal.. She is the first and only child and grandchild. Do you think we give into her so why talk???

Did I get a message ? Not sure if I am looking at the right area.

ok.. thank you

Brief Answer:
Talking

Detailed Answer:
hello. i just read through your question.

I do think there is a problem here. Even kids whose parents and grandparents give in to them will still talk. i think it's great that she can sing her abc's and count, and recognize letters, etc.. But 3 year olds are usually talking a lot, unless in the presence of strangers.

I am not convinced that her motor delays are related. But regardless, this is important to bring up to her pediatrician. often a few simple sessions with a speech therapist is enough to get the kids going. I definitely recommend having this discussion with her pediatrician.

I see.
The next step would be a pediatric neurologist to evaluate if there are any other deficits that can account for this.

I was at Mavrie's birth and when she was born she had her cord wrapped around her neck 2X and she wasn't breathing. A code blue was administered.
Could this have caused her delays.

That is a good question. I don't think anyone could tell you definitively if that had anything to do with it or not. But it definitely could have.

So you think she should be seen by a pediatric neurologist. Do you think she could have autism?

I wouldn't make any assessment without the evaluation. meaning, I can't say yes or no. But I believe the evaluation will be very helpful.
