What Causes Leg Weakness And Nerve Problems Behind The Thighs And Calves?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 May 2016
Question: I have been developing what seems to be nerve problems on the back of my thighs when sitting. Now it is on the back of my calves and also in my feet. I also feel a lot of weakness in my legs. As early as a year and a half ago, I did not have any of this. I cannot find any slipper that is loose enough for me not to have pain. It seems to be getting worse in a very rapid speed. Even my socks bother my feet. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
Lumbar spine condition.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for being here on HCM.

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Symptoms you refer you are experiencing are encountered mainly in conditions that affect your lumbar spine and are known also as bilateral sciatica.

Conditions such degenerative lumbar spine disease, herniated disc disease and lumbar spondylolysthesis ( slipped vertebrae ) should be assessed further and in no time, since there is rapid progress of the symptoms.

For this purpose you need to be evaluated by a Neurologist or Orthopedic surgeon and you need imaging studies done in order to achieve the correct diagnosis.

Imaging studies needed include static and dynamic x-rays of your lumbar spine (flexed and extended position to evaluate spondylolysthesis) and MRI as well.

Treatment depends on the diagnosis and includes conservative measures such NSAID drugs use, physical therapy with the aim of strengthening lumbar muscles and reducing joint loading, or surgery to decompress the spinal cord and to stabilize it if there is significant stenosis and/or instability.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

I remain at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.

Greetings.
