What Causes Looser Bowel Movements And Pelvic Pain After Mirena Coil Insertion?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Jul 2014
Question: Hi, I had a mirena coil fitted in January this year after 8 months of constant bleeding, a hysteroscopy,d &c, later on endometrial ablation, and a previous mirena coil fitted in November that fell out. I was eventually told by gynaecologist I had a fibroid and also adenomyosis. My question is since this mirena coil was inserted I appear to have looser bowel movements, also a pain in my left side pelvic area, bloating and twice I felt like I had a urinary infection but got this ruled out by my gp. Is this normal or should I go get an ultrasound to check is this coil pressing against my bladder causing these issues?

Brief Answer:
Possibly due to Uterus spasm

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms,
Mirena Coil is Levonorgestol releasing intra-uterine contraceptive device. Being a foreign body, Uterus contracts to expel it out. This causes cramp like pain in lower abdomen, which is quite common in first few weeks of insertion of device. As the Uterine spasm settles down there is improvement in symptoms.

As Uterus , Bladder and rectum share the same pelvic muscle, affection of Uterus can also have minor rectal and urinary complaints. Do not worry things should settle down.

If you notice any of the following, consult your gynecologist

1. Foul smelling vaginal discharge
2. Persistent severe pain in abdomen
3. Fever

Brief Answer:
It's unlikely to last so long

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Greetings
It's unlikely for symptoms to last for 5 months. If the symptoms are severe and worrisome, removal of IUCD and using other birth control measures is recommended.

Take care
